Day 17 - Holywell Bay to Newquay - 22 May 19
This was always going to be a rest day!
But I thought it was a good idea to walk the 5 miles to Newquay and Linda agreed.
The walk ended up nearly 8 miles and hard.
Next time I am sticking to my rest day plans.
We had a slow start to the day as we knew we didn't have to drive anywhere, it was a simple leave the caravan and begin walking.
So, we went slightly wrong at the start, again losing the signage to the path, so ended up walking a little extra here.
As Linda looked over a ridge she stated she could see a Seal and asked me if I thought it was dead.
Too which I looked and agreed it was a seal pup and it must have died.
Then to our amazement, it started to move, moving towards the sea.
It moved about 5 yards and stopped again.
I asked Linda to film it, so we stood there ages waiting for it to move, but nothing.
I was quite impressed that I had found an animal lazier than I.
Eventually, we gave up and carried on walking.
I told a couple walking in the other direction and about 30 mins later we could still see that couple looking over the ridge.
We were glad we didn't wait as it would have delayed our walk.
This day was hot for May, but remember it was only a quick walk, so we didn't really prepare.
What we were not prepared for was the stretch that we had to walk inland at the river Gannel, we thought we could cross quite early as e could see a crossing, but the coastal path signs refused to let us and made us walk further and further inland.
We found the bridge, now we have a slight problem.
See below:
The beginning of the bridge is surrounded by water.
Now Linda had her waterproof walking boots on, but I had the non-waterproof trainers.
Eventually, I found a route and made a jump.
One foot hit the water, I got it out without it getting wet, but the splash from this foot, hit my other foot, so the one foot that didn't touch the water was wet through.
A short walk it was in mileage but in mental strain, this was a lot further.
I had enough of the trainers as they are not designed for long walks but knew I could not cope with boots, so bought some walking trainers and Linda didn't want to be left out, so we both bought some.
15% off with my Veterans Discount card helped.
Mandatory visit below:
Bit of shopping, dinner and a few drinks in Newquay helped ease the pains.
A slow bus journey back to Holywell Bay but only about £3 each, not bad.
